Quassia is a deciduous tree native to the Amazon rainforest. It may also be known as – Bitterwood, Bitter Ash, Surinam Wood, Amargo, Kwassi, Pau Amarelo, Pau Quassia, Bitterholz, Gorzkla, Amargo,
Écorce de Quassia, Palo de Cuasia, Pao Tariri, Picrasma, Ruda, Surinam Wood & Pao Tariri.

Quassia was used traditionally in the early 18th century quassia to treat fevers and stomach problems and to cure alcoholism by followers of the 19th century temperance movement. The herb has little aroma but is incredibly bitter and was mixed with sulphuric acid to ‘as a cure for drunkenness, by destroying the appetite for alcoholics’ according to Maud Grieve.

Extracts made from the bark of this herb contain compounds called quassinoids known to have insecticidal properties which could be uesful against several types of insects. There is some indication that these quassinoid could also be used to get rid of head lice.

1:3 Alcohol Volume 25%. Take 10 – 15 drops 2 x daily.
